Happy World Bicycle Day!
Today marks the 3rd annual World Bicycle Day in history. Better late than never, the United Nations decided in 2018 that the bicycle deserves its own holiday. In the World Bicycle Day resolution, the United Nations stated that cycling not only has positive effects on public health and the climate, but also brings economic and social benefits. The bicycle can therefore make an important contribution to achieving the UN sustainable development goals and shall therefore be promoted by all UN member states.
Unfortunately this year, due to the Covid pandemic, there are only few public events to celebrate World Bicycle Day. So we think, it’s even more important now that each of us contributes to saving this young holiday from being forgotten!
What exactly can you do?
- Tell your friends about World Cycling Day, either in person or on social media
- Organise a small group ride – the current Covid protective measures in Switzerland luckily allow this safely
- Find out about local initiatives in your city that promote cycling and support them
